Flashlight

An ephemeral shaft of light lights
a path through the unknowable darkness,
a child’s ray of hope in infinite night’s
impenetrable nocturnal grimace.

Fragile, potent as thought, it illumines
an illuminating transient passage.
Life’s oasis in death’s desert begins
vision to all un and conscious knowledge.

This brief light is perception’s perception,
existence’s fleeting and rapturous
firefly bit of exuberant motion
braving eternity’s smug emptiness.

Dark pierced by light viewed actual in sight
reflects humanity’s gift for insight.
